What happensPermalink
Judah’s sin is engraved deeply on its heart, so enemies will take its wealth and land. Those who trust human strength are like shrubs in a desert, while those who trust the Lord are like trees beside water, fruitful even in drought. The human heart is deceitful and desperately sick, but God searches and judges it. Jeremiah prays for healing and vindication amid his opponents’ mockery. God sends him to Jerusalem’s gates: if Judah honors the Sabbath, the city will flourish under Davidic kings; if they refuse, its gates will burn.
Why it mattersPermalink
Judah’s sin is engraved on the heart, while God searches its hidden motives. The trees beside water recall Psalm 1, and the Sabbath command gives trust a concrete expression in public life. Chapter 31 will answer the image of engraved sin with God’s promise to write His law on His people’s hearts.
Key versePermalink
I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.
