What happensPermalink
God tells Jeremiah that even Moses and Samuel could not intercede successfully for Judah; death, sword, famine, and captivity are coming, with Manasseh’s evil singled out. Jeremiah laments that everyone hates him despite his faithful service. He delights in God’s words, yet persecution makes him question God’s reliability. God calls Jeremiah himself to return, speak what is precious rather than worthless, and remain His spokesman. He renews His promise to make Jeremiah a fortified bronze wall whom his enemies cannot overcome.
Why it mattersPermalink
Judah’s persistent rebellion has reached the point where even the greatest intercessors cannot avert judgment. Yet Jeremiah’s own suffering also threatens his faithfulness. God does not merely comfort him; He corrects and recommissions him. The prophet who calls Judah to return must himself continually return to God and trust the protection promised at his calling.
Key versePermalink
Therefore thus says the Lord: “If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them.”
