Demons believe in God and shudder; Abraham and Rahab show that living faith acts through obedience.

The chapter’s halves meet in mercy: professed faith that neglects a needy neighbor is empty. James and Paul confront different errors. Paul denies that works establish sinners as righteous before God; James denies that mere profession is living faith. Works do not replace faith; they complete and reveal it.
