God tells the faithful to remember Abraham and Sarah: from one couple He made a nation, so He can restore Zion’s wilderness to Eden. His salvation will outlast creation, so they need not fear human reproach. They call the Lord’s arm to awake as in the exodus, when He defeated Egypt and opened the sea. God answers that they have forgotten their Creator by fearing mortal oppressors. Jerusalem must awake: having drained His cup of wrath, she will see it handed to those who trampled her.
Why it mattersPermalink
God comforts fearful Zion by grounding His restoration in creation, Abraham, the exodus, and His everlasting righteousness. The exiles mistake Babylon’s power for ultimate power and God’s delay for absence. Yet the arm they ask to awaken has never weakened. God has disciplined Jerusalem, but now transfers the cup of wrath to her oppressors. Human tyrants perish; His salvation endures beyond creation.
