Israel invokes God’s name without truth or righteousness. Because His people are stubborn, God announced events beforehand so they could not credit their idols. Now He reveals new things: His chosen ruler will defeat Babylon. The Creator and Redeemer teaches His people the way to go; had they obeyed, their peace and descendants would have overflowed. Yet for His name’s sake, God restrains His wrath, refines them through affliction, and calls them from Babylon in a second exodus.
Why it mattersPermalink
God exposes Israel’s stubborn hypocrisy, proves His sovereignty through fulfilled prophecy, and calls His people out of Babylon. Prophecy prevents them from crediting idols and assures them that Cyrus fulfills God’s plan. Their disobedience forfeited peace but did not cancel His covenant purpose. He refines and rescues them for His name, while warning that release brings no peace to those who remain wicked.
