Hezekiah becomes mortally ill, and Isaiah tells him to prepare for death. Hezekiah weeps and prays, so God grants him fifteen more years and gives a sign by making the shadow retreat ten steps on the steps of Ahaz. Hezekiah’s song recalls his anguish at approaching death, then praises God for lovingly delivering him, forgiving his sins, and enabling him to worship among the living.
Why it mattersPermalink
God mercifully rescues the dying Hezekiah, granting him more life and renewed opportunity to praise and teach God’s faithfulness. Isaiah 38:6 suggests that these events likely precede chapters 36–37, because deliverance from Assyria remains future. The king’s healing and Jerusalem’s rescue form one pattern of grace, yet his mortality shows that Hezekiah is not Isaiah’s everlasting Davidic ruler.
