What happensPermalink

God brings a lawsuit against Israel because there is no faithfulness, steadfast love, or knowledge of God in the land; instead, swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery abound. Priests and prophets share the people’s guilt. The priests have rejected knowledge and forgotten God’s law, while profiting from the people’s sin. Israel pursues idols and cult prostitution, and sexual immorality spreads throughout society. Hosea warns Judah not to follow Israel into guilt.

Why it mattersPermalink

Israel’s sins violate the covenant law: the nation has abandoned both God’s commands and God Himself. Its priests, charged with teaching that law, have instead encouraged and benefited from corruption, but the people remain responsible for willingly following them. Hosea therefore connects idolatry, failed spiritual leadership, and social breakdown. Judah receives Israel’s collapse as a warning.

Key versePermalink

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

Hosea 4:6
