What happensPermalink

God tells Habakkuk to write the vision plainly: its fulfillment awaits an appointed time, and though it seems slow, it will surely come. The proud will not endure, but the righteous will live by faith. God then pronounces five woes against Babylon for plunder, unjust gain, bloodshed, humiliation, and idolatry. Babylon’s apparent glory will become shame, while knowledge of the Lord’s glory fills the earth.

Why it mattersPermalink

God’s answer is that Babylon’s violence has an end. Judgment may seem delayed, but it is certain, so God’s people must live by faithful trust while they wait. The five woes show justice as reversal: Babylon will receive the violence, shame, and futility it imposed on others. Human empires cannot secure themselves through power or idols. Habakkuk must learn patient confidence that God’s appointed judgment and glory will prevail.

Key versePermalink
