Jacob adopts Joseph’s sons Ephraim and Manasseh. He blesses them and extends to them God’s promise to his own sons. He raises Ephraim as the greater, even though Manasseh was firstborn.

This adoption means the twelve-part inheritance remains intact. Joseph’s part is divided in two, making thirteen, but Levi doesn’t receive land. God’s abundance extends to all generations. He continues not respecting human traditions of inheritance.
