What happensPermalink

Ezekiel announces that the end has come for the land of Israel. God will judge the people without pity, according to their conduct. Violence, pride, and idolatry have led to punishment. The trumpet sounds, but no one goes to battle. Sword, famine, and pestilence overwhelm them. Silver and gold cannot save them; wealth becomes plunder, and foreigners profane the sanctuary. Disaster follows disaster as prophetic vision, priestly instruction, and elders’ counsel fail; rulers despair, and the people tremble.

Why it mattersPermalink

The judgments enacted in chapters 4–6 now engulf Israel’s whole social order. The people seek guidance as disaster approaches, while the institutions they trusted collapse. God’s judgment reaches their wealth, worship, leadership, and land. The coming temple vision in chapters 8–11 will expose corruption at the heart of their worship. God repays Israel according to its ways so that they know He is the Lord.

Key versePermalink

The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.
