What happensPermalink
Ezekiel prophesies to Israel’s mountains that God will defeat their enemies, restore their fruitfulness, and repopulate their cities. Israel had defiled the land, so God scattered them among the nations, where their exile profaned His holy name. Therefore, for His name’s sake, God will gather them home, cleanse them from impurity and idols, give them a new heart and spirit, and put His own Spirit within them so that they obey Him. He will make the ruined land like Eden and multiply His people.
Why it mattersPermalink
God’s promised cleansing reverses the defilement that led to exile, reaching both the people and their land. He acts to vindicate His holy name before the nations, bringing mercy through inward transformation, His Spirit, and renewed community. Chapter 18 commanded a new heart; God now promises to give it. The next chapter pictures that renewal as life breathed into dry bones.
