What happensPermalink

Ezekiel condemns Israel’s shepherds for feeding themselves while neglecting the flock, leaving the weak vulnerable and the people scattered. God will remove these shepherds and Himself seek, gather, feed, heal, and protect His sheep. He will also judge within the flock, condemning strong sheep that trample pastures, muddy waters, and shove aside the weak. God will appoint His servant David as their one shepherd and make a covenant of peace, bringing security, abundant harvests, and freedom from oppression.

Why it mattersPermalink

Israel’s failed rulers scattered the people; restoration begins with God reversing their work. He will both shepherd His people Himself and appoint a new Davidic shepherd over them. For Christians, Jesus fulfills these promises as the divine, Davidic Good Shepherd. God also removes injustice within the flock, while the covenant of peace extends restoration to the land itself, reversing the insecurity and barrenness of judgment.
