What happensPermalink

Ezekiel asks Pharaoh who compares with him, then describes Assyria as an enormous cedar. Its branches towered above every tree, nations lived in its shade, and even Eden’s trees envied its beauty. But its height made its heart proud, so God handed it over to a mighty conqueror to be cut down. The peoples who sheltered beneath it scattered, while the nations mourned its fall into Sheol. Ezekiel turns the image toward Egypt: Pharaoh and his multitude will likewise descend among those slain by the sword.

Why it mattersPermalink

Assyria’s extraordinary greatness could not protect it once pride invited God’s judgment; Egypt should expect no better. The cosmic tree imagery shows God ruling over even the mightiest empires. Ezekiel also echoes Isaiah 10, where proud Assyria is pictured as a forest whose towering trees God cuts down. Egypt now faces the same sovereign Lord.

Key versePermalink

Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? You shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the world below. You shall lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.
