The book introduces the Preacher, son of David and king in Jerusalem. He asks what lasting gain people receive from all their labor. Generations pass while the earth’s cycles continue, producing nothing truly new and leaving little remembrance. Having acquired surpassing wisdom, he devotes himself to investigating everything done under heaven, including wisdom, madness, and folly.
Why it mattersPermalink
His opening investigation names life under the sun as vanity: human labor, achievement, and memory are fleeting, while the world’s repetitive patterns resist explanation. Wisdom can perceive much of this fallen world’s disorder, but it cannot straighten what is crooked or fully comprehend God’s providence. Greater knowledge therefore brings greater sorrow. The quest begins by exposing the limits of human wisdom and moving the Preacher toward wisdom grounded in fear of God.
