What happensPermalink

Nebuchadnezzar erects a golden image and commands people to worship it. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse, declaring that God can rescue them and that they will remain faithful even if He does not. The king throws them into an overheated furnace, whose flames kill the soldiers carrying them. Yet the three walk unharmed alongside a fourth figure. Nebuchadnezzar calls them out, praises their God, forbids speaking against Him, and promotes them.

Why it mattersPermalink

The golden image recalls chapter 2, where Nebuchadnezzar was only the statue’s golden head. Here royal power demands the worship owed to God. The friends’ obedience does not depend on rescue, anticipating the faithful sufferers in later visions. Nebuchadnezzar describes their companion in the furnace as God’s angel. Their rescue answers the king’s challenge about who could deliver them from his hand.

Key versePermalink

But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.

Daniel 3:18
