What happensPermalink
Amos pronounces woe on those who feel secure in Zion and Samaria. Israel’s wealthy leaders lounge on ivory beds, feast lavishly, drink bowls of wine, and anoint themselves with fine oils while remaining unconcerned about the ruin of Joseph. They will therefore be the first taken into exile. God declares that He abhors Israel’s pride and will destroy its houses and strongholds. Though Israel celebrates its military victories and trusts its own strength, God will raise up a nation to oppress the kingdom from one end to the other.
Why it mattersPermalink
Prosperity and military success have convinced Israel’s leaders that they are secure, even while injustice and judgment surround them. Their luxury exposes a deeper complacency: they enjoy abundance without grieving over the corruption of God’s people. Israel’s recent victories cannot protect it. The strength in which they boast is insignificant beside the nation God will raise against them.
Key versePermalink
Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes!
