What happensPermalink

Amos condemns Samaria’s wealthy women, whose luxury depends on oppression of the poor, and promises they will be dragged away. He sarcastically urges Israel to multiply its religious offerings at Bethel and Gilgal, because their enthusiastic worship only multiplies their rebellion. God has repeatedly struck Israel with famine, drought, ruined crops, pestilence, war, and destruction, yet after every warning, “you did not return to me.” Therefore Israel must prepare to meet its God, the sovereign Creator of all the earth.

Why it mattersPermalink

Israel eagerly practices religion while exploiting the vulnerable, revealing how little its worship reflects genuine relationship with God. Yet God has repeatedly disciplined His people in ways meant to call them back to Him. Their persistent refusal to return leaves judgment ahead. The God they are about to meet commands creation itself; Israel cannot escape or overpower Him.
