Paul warns that some will abandon the faith, following deceitful spirits and demon-inspired teachings. These false teachers promote asceticism—rejecting marriage and certain foods—but Paul affirms that everything God created is good and to be received with thanksgiving. Timothy must stand against such distortions by living and teaching the true gospel. Though still young, he must not shrink back but set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
