Believers must put away sin and grow on spiritual milk. Christ is the living cornerstone: those who trust Him receive honor; those who reject Him stumble. Believers become God’s spiritual house and holy priesthood, bearing Israel’s covenant titles and proclaiming His excellencies among the nations through honorable conduct. They should submit to authorities; household servants should endure unjust masters while doing good. Christ provides salvation and pattern: He bore our sins so we might die to sin and live to righteousness.

Peter joins identity to mission. God’s people are exiles in society yet His temple and priesthood within it. Their conduct displays God’s goodness before others. Peter does not call injustice good: he points suffering servants to Christ, whose atoning death saves wandering sheep and whose endurance gives them a path to follow.
