Believers must put away sin and long for pure spiritual milk to grow in salvation. Coming to Christ, the living stone, they become a spiritual house and holy priesthood. Those who trust the cornerstone receive honor; those who reject Him stumble. Peter gives the church Israel’s covenant titles and calls it to proclaim God’s excellencies through honorable conduct among the nations. This includes submitting to authorities; Peter tells household servants to endure unjust masters while doing good. Christ provides both salvation and pattern: He bore our sins so we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
Why it mattersPermalink
Peter joins identity to mission. God’s people are exiles in society yet His temple and priesthood within it. Their conduct displays God’s goodness before others. Peter does not call injustice good: he points suffering servants to Christ, whose atoning death saves wandering sheep and whose endurance gives them a path to follow.
