Everyone who believes Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. Believers love God and His children, keep His commands—which are not burdensome—and overcome the world through faith. God testifies to His Son through the Spirit, water, and blood; these witnesses agree that eternal life is in Jesus. John writes so believers may know they have eternal life and that God hears requests made according to His will. He urges prayer for a believer who sins, while distinguishing sin that does and does not lead to death.

New birth joins faith, love, and obedience. John gathers the letter’s themes around God’s testimony to His Son. Assurance rests in Jesus and appears in faithful love, obedience, prayer, and resistance to false gods. The closing warning against idols guards this life by directing believers wholly to the true God.
